Centro MOON: The Creative Hub of Badia Tedalda
The Centro MOON is an ambitious urban regeneration initiative that will transform the former slaughterhouse of Badia Tedalda into a vibrant hub for arts and creativity. Located at the heart of the community and surrounded by sports areas and nature trails, the MOON will be a meeting point for young people and adults in search of inspiration and opportunities for artistic expression.

A multifunctional centre dedicated to arts and creativity
The former slaughterhouse of Badia Tedalda, currently partially used as storage space for theatre companies and music studios, will be transformed into a multifunctional centre dedicated to arts and creativity. Known as MOON — an evocative acronym for the Alpe della Luna — this space will serve as a bridge between formal and informal education, offering a wide range of cultural, artistic and social activities for young people and adults.
The MOON will host cultural events, artist residencies, concerts, exhibitions and educational workshops, offering residents and visitors a comprehensive overview of local and international culture. It will also serve as a point of reference for the school community, providing academic support services and opportunities for students to engage in artistic and cultural projects.
In collaboration with the CasermArcheologica Association, specialists in urban regeneration, the Municipality of Badia Tedalda will lead the process of transforming the former slaughterhouse into a dynamic and sustainable cultural centre. The public-private partnership will ensure efficient management and the creation of functional, welcoming spaces for the planned activities.
An ambitious project
L’ex mattatoio di Badia Tedalda, attualmente parzialmente utilizzato come magazzini per compagnie teatrali e studi musicali, si trasformerà in un centro multifunzionale dedicato alle arti e alla creatività.

Cycling and Walking Trail along the Tiber
The PNRR Project has transformed the trail along the Tiber into a unique cycling and walking route, passing through the historic centre of Pieve Santo Stefano and offering evocative views of the river.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the sacred river and its millennia-old secrets along the Tiber trail — a journey through the history and nature of Pieve Santo Stefano.
The trail makes accessible one of Pieve Santo Stefano’s most important resources: the Tiber, the sacred river. The entire area was once a centre for the collection, transit and dispatch of timber. The woods and forests of the Tiber Valley supplied Rome with the materials needed for the construction of its fleet, temples and dwellings. The logs would ride the course of the Tiber by floating — a method devised to reduce the costs and difficulties of transportation.
In 1636, during restoration works on the small chapel of the Madonna del Colledestro, a Roman-era inscription was discovered bearing the commission of Publius Sulpicius and his wife Cellina, who had erected a temple to the god Tiber and the Nymphs. It is the name Suppetia that appears in the earliest manuscript — a notarial deed of 723 in which Tedaldo, lord of Tiphernum (present-day Città di Castello), Suppetia and the Massa Trabaria, donates to Benedictine monks a monastery at Cerbarolum (today Cerbaiolo, a Franciscan monastery on the Way of Saint Francis). Some historians have proposed that Suppetia< derives from the Latin verb suppeditare, which transitively means “to send, to supply” (in this case referring to timber floated down to Rome) and intransitively means “to be in abundance” (again alluding to the richness of the forests).
In later documents, however, the place name becomes corrupted to Sulpitia — and it remains uncertain whether this was a mere formal variation or whether it derived from the very Publius Sulpicius mentioned on the inscription found in the small chapel at Colledestro.

How the project will be developed

The Municipality of Pieve Santo Stefano and local associations are working in partnership to make the Pieve Santo Stefano Municipal Library more appealing to young people, by adapting its spaces and offering educational activities that respond to their interests — and above all by applying methodologies aimed at building knowledge through the experiential, hands-on approach that is characteristic of workshop-based learning.

The Nuova Piazza del Sapere Library in Pieve Santo Stefano is being transformed into a vibrant centre of learning and creativity through a collaborative partnership between the Municipality and local associations.
The Municipality’s primary partner is the LIBRIFATTIAMANO social promotion association, based in Pieve Santo Stefano. Since 2014, this association has been actively managing the children’s and young adults’ section of the municipal library, and carries out an ongoing programme of exchange between the library and teachers, offering an annual programme of activities centred on illustration, writing and bookmaking workshops, which has drawn a great number of young visitors to the library.
The LIBRI FATTI A MANO Association also carries out the following activities:
- Teacher training, aimed at promoting reading, creative writing and the making of handcrafted books, understood both as artistic objects and as educational pathways.
- Social education projects, with targeted interventions in classes facing particular situations of hardship. These projects are workshop-based programmes developed on a case-by-case basis according to the issues at hand, and always involve students in hands-on activities guided by the cooperative learning method.
- Meetings with authors and publishers of children’s and young adult books.
- Fundraising for the purchase of books to be donated to local schools.
- Annual organisation of the LIBRIFATTIAMANO festival.
- Production of travelling exhibitions drawing on a collection of handmade books built up over many years of activity.
- Meetings with parents and grandparents to promote the “shared book” method developed by British researchers Lynne Murray and Peter Cooper — a method that encourages children aged 0 to 3 to engage with books.

A place to experience positive socialisation, develop manual skills, promote civic coexistence, intergenerational solidarity, and explore themes related to global citizenship and environmental sustainability.

The project’s other partners are the PRO LOCO of Pieve Santo Stefano, VOLLEY REVOLUTION — a young and dynamic association that develops recreational and sporting activities for the very young — and the GRUPPO STORICO PALIO DEI LUMI APS, which for over 50 years has been organising a historical re-enactment linked to Pieve’s most important and ancient celebration: the Festa della Madonna dei Lumi (Festival of Our Lady of Lights).
The project’s main objective is to create within the library an inclusive, free-of-charge workshop space dedicated to the arts, communication techniques and traditional crafts, where both theory and practice revolve around the book as a creative synthesis of word and image, of stories and narratives, of manual skill and technical knowledge. A place where people with disabilities can also find opportunities to take part in recreational activities that meet their educational and social needs.
The project also aims to reveal the great possibilities offered by dialogue — as a means of exploring a theme in depth, of developing listening and attention skills, of practising true democracy and of building that authentic knowledge which is the fruit of shared enquiry.
In order to make the library a “new square of knowledge” — as Antonella Agnoli describes it in her book “Le piazze del sapere: Biblioteche e libertà” (Squares of Knowledge: Libraries and Freedom) — great care will be taken with the arrangement of the space, with all the adjustments needed to make it functional for each activity: movable shelving, accessible books, tools to turn the library into a workshop, and an opening towards the outside, towards outdoor spaces — so important because they encourage relationships and a sense of community.

Montessori School in Badia Tedalda
The Istituto Comprensivo Voluseno offers students and teachers high-quality education based on the Montessori Method

At the Scuola Statale “Lucio Voluseno” (Lucio Voluseno State School), a Montessori section is active, thanks to the qualification obtained by teacher Valentina Falleri.
The awareness that the future of a small, inland village such as this is tied to the continued presence of new generations with concrete and sustainable life prospects has always driven the school to commit to delivering an educational offer that is both high in quality and distinctive, in order to ensure the academic success of every pupil.
The school of Badia Tedalda, as the only educational centre in the area, is characterised by a curriculum that enriches school time by grounding the study of various subjects in first-hand observation, local field trips, information gathering, and small-group synthesis and presentations to the class as moments of sharing, alongside cross-disciplinary activities spanning different subjects and year groups.
The entire educational project, from the very first years of a child’s life, is built around the development of autonomy which, through the individualisation of learning, supports the growth of each pupil within the class in a spirit of interpersonal and social collaboration, preparing them for an active role within the society that will welcome them beyond school.
Furthermore, from 23 June 2023, the Institute has activated in Badia Tedalda, in partnership with the Opera Nazionale Montessori (National Montessori Association), a course in Montessori teaching differentiation for primary school teachers.
Help me do it myself!
A simple phrase, yet capable of summing up the entire method in five words. Education begins at birth and is crucial in the period from 0 to 6 years of age, as a support to the development of the innate psychological capacities of the individual.

Gothic Line Historical Park
The territory of Badia Tedalda was considered strategically vital by the Germans during the Second World War, becoming the “heart” of the defensive system known as the Gothic Line.

Here, the remains of the fortifications are preserved within a striking and unspoilt natural setting, and can be reached via the trails of the Gothic Line Historical Park.
The Gothic Line Historical Park is a true open-air museum: established in 2011 with the aim of enhancing the material and intangible heritage left to us by these events of the last century, it offers visitors a series of routes connecting the most significant sites, with the purpose of recreating a “journey through memories”.
Also forming part of the Park are two educational trails departing from the village centre of Badia Tedalda, along which visitors can find both original fortification remains and reconstructed positions, together with dedicated explanatory and informational panels.
Furthermore, within the Museo Comunale dell’Alta Valmarecchia Toscana (Municipal Museum of the Upper Tuscan Valmarecchia), a Gothic Line Documentation Centre has been set up: a space equipped with a multimedia installation through which visitors can access a wide range of informational and audiovisual content relating to the Gothic Line and, in particular, to the events in which Badia Tedalda and its inhabitants played a central role.
Guided visits, excursions and educational workshops for schools are available by prior booking.

Upon reaching the Sasso di Cocchiola, visitors are confronted with the remains of a true complex of fortifications, each of which served a specific purpose.
This site has a distinctive feature: its panoramic position made it well suited for observation and anti-aircraft use, while at the same time it was required to serve as a defensive stronghold against a potential ground attack that might have “broken through” the Passo di Viamaggio. In this regard, it should be noted that in addition to the visible remains, many other positions once existed in the surrounding area that have since been lost: they formed a network that extended, through a series of connecting and contact points, to the Divisional Command at Badia Tedalda.
MONTE DEI FRATI
Starting point: Poggio La Piazzuola (822 m a.s.l.)
Finishing point: Monte dei Frati (1,453 m a.s.l.)
Length: 5 km
Total ascent: 631 m 631
Return: along the same route
Difficulty: E
These areas of the Alpe della Luna, before the arrival of the Gothic Line fortifications, witnessed the presence of several partisan groups and were therefore the scene of partisan actions, Nazi-Fascist round-ups, armed clashes and executions.
In the first part of the route, several vantage points overlook the Val di Bruci, which served as the “logistical base” for the men engaged in the construction of the fortifications on Monte dei Frati: this was, in fact, the furthest point the Germans were able to reach with motorised vehicles.
As the route continues, it becomes clear how the main fortification points were not only strategically positioned, but also maintained a direct “line of sight” with one another.

From a historical, artistic and architectural standpoint, the territory of Badia Tedalda is marked by the presence of remains and evidence dating back to various historical periods.
Within its walls are carefully preserved the precious finds that document the origins of this area: mineral, fossil and archaeological discoveries, as well as objects and fragments of architectural decoration dating from the medieval, Romanesque and Lombard periods.
.
There is also a lapidary collection of materials originating predominantly from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, including an arched festoon that originally adorned the portal, fragments of capitals and architectural decorations from the 11th to the 16th century, as well as a distinctive monolithic lunette featuring an archaic-style bust of the Madonna.
The exhibition route also includes the madia dei ricordi (cabinet of memories) — a collection of historical photographs portraying the people, events and moments that capture life in Badia Tedalda during the last century. Also held within the Museum is the precious historical archive of Don Amedeo Potito, donated by him to the Municipality of Badia Tedalda. Don Potito was a meticulous researcher and scholar of Church history, and the author of numerous works that have enriched the historical record of the settlements of the Upper Valmarecchia, and of Badia Tedalda in particular.
